An expert in the field of nanotechnology, researcher, inventor, author of two technologies, dozens of patents and over 50 publications – this is a brief description of Prof. Dr. Hab. Eng. Tomasz Ciach, Chairman of the Scientific Council at NanoSanguis, one of the companies of the NanoGroup group.
Prof. Tomasz Ciach, as befits a scientist, can boast a rich scientific CV. He graduated with a master’s degree from two universities: in 1991 from the Warsaw University of Technology at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, and a year later from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw. At the Warsaw University of Technology, he then obtained the titles of doctor (1998) and habilitated doctor (2010). In 2019, President Andrzej Duda presented him with a professorial nomination in the field of engineering and technical sciences.
During this time he participated in scientific internships at renowned foreign universities: the Institute of Experimental Physics in Vienna, the Lund University of Technology and the University of Helsinki. In the years 2000-2003 he was briefly associated professionally with the Delft University of Technology.
Currently, Prof. Ciach heads the Department of Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering at the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology, and is also a member of the management board of the listed company NanoGroup, and two companies that are part of the group: NanoVelos and NanoThea.
Prof. Ciach is a visionary, but also a creator of technologies, many of which have been commercialized. An example of such solutions are polymer structures based on nanofibers for the filtration of liquids and gases. This technology was developed on a mass scale by the British branch of Amazon. Other examples include: technologies for the production of coronary stents that secrete drugs, Nelaton type urinary catheters with high biocompatibility (a solution still used today by one of the Polish companies based in Bydgoszcz). In the area of bioengineering, he worked on hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, which are used in various types of medical products, polymer fillings and cosmetics. One of the technologies was licensed by the University of Technology to Biovico in Gdynia.
Currently, Prof. Ciach leads research on nanosystems used in medicine, which is the main focus of his research work. These are mainly nanoparticles and macromolecules intended for targeted delivery of drugs and nucleic acids for use in the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases. This work is carried out both at NanoGroup and at the Warsaw University of Technology.
Prof. Tomasz Ciach has successfully combined his research career with his professional career for many years. He is the founder of the companies NanoVelos, NanoSanguis and NanoThea, which currently form the NanoGroup capital group. These companies deal with polysaccharide nanoparticles for drug delivery for cancer treatment, oxygen carrier nanoparticles for long-term storage of human organs and polysaccharide nanoparticles containing isotopes for cancer brachytherapy.
In addition, he is involved in two other projects no longer associated with NanoGroup. These are the companies: StenoCoat, which deals with the development of coatings for medical devices, and Science4Beauty, where he acts as an investor and mentor. This company deals with the development of modern cosmetics based on scientific knowledge and the first product is already on the market.
